Washing and make-up after rhinoplasty
Washing and make-up after rhinoplasty start carefully, in step with recovery. General guidance on when and how to begin.
Washing and make-up after rhinoplasty resume gradually as the incisions heal and swelling settles. Extra care is needed while the splint and stitches are in place.
When can I wash my face?
Until the splint and stitches come off, the usual advice is to keep water away from the operated area. Before the splint comes off, wash gently around the nose, then widen the area step by step. Exact timing depends on healing: gentle washing that avoids the nose before the splint is removed, and normal washing after about 2–7 days.
When can I wear make-up?
Make-up around the nose usually starts once the incisions have healed and the stitches are out. Before then, keep make-up light and away from the nose; make-up and cleansing on the nose resume as you heal. Light make-up that avoids the nose is generally possible after about 7 days.
Things to watch
- Don't rub or pull at the splint or stitch area
- Don't press or scrub the nose when cleansing
- Avoid harsh products while healing
- Follow advice on glasses and anything that puts pressure on the nose
Returning to daily life
Washing and make-up are part of getting back to normal. Exercise, saunas and alcohol have their own timings, so check the clinic's overall schedule. Saunas, heat treatments and alcohol are generally avoided for about 4 weeks, and exercise resumes after about 4 weeks. Glasses can be worn over the splint.
Frequently asked questions
Can I wash my hair while wearing the splint? The key is to keep the splint dry; usually you wash with your head tilted back or with someone's help. Follow the clinic's specific advice.
Why shouldn't I start make-up earlier? Make-up on the nose before the incisions heal can cause irritation or infection, so it isn't recommended. It is safer to start after healing has been checked.
