When tip plasty is considered
Tip plasty refines a bulbous, upturned or low nasal tip. When it is considered, the methods used and what recovery involves.
Tip plasty refines the shape, height and direction of the nasal tip. Sometimes only the tip is treated and the bridge left as it is; sometimes it is part of a wider rhinoplasty.
What is it?
The shape and position of the tip cartilages are adjusted to give a more defined, natural tip. The approach depends on the concern — a round, upturned, low or off-centre tip.
When is it considered?
- The tip looks blunt and wide
- The tip is upturned so the nostrils show prominently
- The tip is low or looks weak
- The bridge is fine and only the tip bothers you
In these cases a consultation may be worth considering; what can be changed depends on the strength of the tip cartilage and the thickness of the skin.
Surgical method
The tip cartilages are brought together or lifted and, where needed, reinforced with your own cartilage to refine the shape. With thick skin the degree of change may differ. Whether to use your own cartilage is decided by harmony with the face and your condition.
Recovery
Swelling eases with time, but the tip takes longer to settle. When stitches come out and when you return to daily life vary. Typically the splint and stitches come off at around 5–7 days, washing and light daily activity are possible after about 2–7 days, and major swelling subsides over 1–2 weeks.
Precautions
During recovery, protect the tip from pressure and knocks and follow the clinic's advice. If anything unusual appears, contact the clinic.
Frequently asked questions
Can I have tip plasty on its own? If you are happy with the bridge and only the tip concerns you, tip plasty alone can be considered. Changing the tip affects the overall proportions, though, so the balance is checked at the consultation.
Can the tip become round again? The shape settles as swelling subsides. The course and how well the result holds vary, so it is worth discussing the expected range at the consultation.
