Exercise after rhinoplasty
When, and in what order, to return to exercise after rhinoplasty — from light walking to intense and contact sports — and what to watch for.
After rhinoplasty it is best to avoid, for a while, activities that raise blood pressure or risk a knock to the nose. Rather than going straight back to your usual routine, build up gradually from light activity.
Why not exercise straight away?
Exercise that makes you sweat and raises your heart rate temporarily increases blood pressure, which can worsen swelling and the risk of bleeding. Early in recovery, even a small knock can affect the shape of the nose, so anything with a risk of impact needs particular care.
Returning step by step
- Light walking — gentle walks are often possible fairly early.
- Light cardio and stretching — start at an intensity that doesn't leave you breathless.
- Strength training — lifting heavy weights while holding your breath pushes pressure into the face, so it starts later.
- Intense exercise, swimming, sauna — later still, because of raised blood pressure and infection risk.
- Contact sports (ball games, martial arts) — last, since the nose can take a direct hit.
When each step can begin depends on the extent of surgery and your recovery. Intense exercise and saunas are usually possible after about 4 weeks; contact sports come later.
What to watch for
- Early on, avoid lying face down or keeping your head bent for long
- Check in advance when you can wear glasses, goggles, helmets or other gear that touches the nose
- If swelling suddenly increases or pain appears after exercise, ease off and contact the clinic
Frequently asked questions
When can I do yoga or Pilates? They involve many forward bends and inverted poses, so they usually start later than ordinary cardio. It depends on the movements, so ask at your follow-up.
How do I manage my weight while I can't exercise? Light activity such as walking, combined with sensible eating, helps. Salty food can add to swelling, so it is worth cutting back during recovery.
